Techniques
Restoration
of the spine to normal function is achieved by performing procedures that
are unique to chiropractic. These are called chiropractic adjustments.
Dr. Dwyer utilizes a wide variety of chiropractic adjusting techniques.
Some are high speed, dynamic movements, others are light touch, low force
applications. The choice of technique is individualized, depending on
the patient’s condition and their response to the adjustment. There
are specific techniques that are appropriate for children as well as seniors.
The chiropractic spinal
adjustments performed in our office fall into three distinct categories:
1. Traditional Techniques
These are known in the profession as short amplitude (small), high velocity
(quickly done) movements of the spinal joints. These are the kind of procedures
that chiropractic is most widely known for. They usually produce cavitation
of the joint, i.e. a popping sound.
2. Soft Tissue Techniques
These involve stretching and pressure of the deep soft tissues of the
spine. They are used judiciously as part of a well thought out approach
to spinal correction.
3. Low Force/Reflex Techniques
These involve the application of very light touch to segments of the spine
as determined by specific body indicators. These techniques allow for
the release of stored tension in the body.
All three categories of chiropractic spinal adjustments offer unique therapeutic
benefit. The art of practice is knowing the most appropriate application
at any given time.
Therapeutics
Electric stimulation, heat and ice are used when appropriate.
